Yarra City Council is proud to present the highlights from the most recent Quarterly Community Report for October, November and December 2023.

The report showcases the work Council is doing to support our community and shows how we’re tracking against our Council Plan for greater transparency.

Below are some highlights from the Quarterly Community Report – Quarter Two 2023/24. You can also read the full report online.

Council Plan 2021-25 achievements

Of the 57 actions set for this financial year, 56 are underway. By December's end, 84% were on track or completed, exceeding our 75% target. Highlights include the development of the Climate Emergency Plan, progress on the Zero Carbon Development Planning Scheme amendment, and the Transport Action Plan.

Capital works and infrastructure improvements

Our $11.65 million investment in the 2023/24 capital works program is improving community safety and infrastructure reliability. Projects range from roads and drainage improvements to upgrades of sports ovals, pavilions, and community facilities that have commenced or been completed:

  • 8 footpaths and cycleways projects that include renewal and upgrade works in Fitzroy, Burnley, Cremorne and Richmond.
  • 14 pavement and renewal works in Collingwood, Fitzroy North, Richmond, Carlton North and Clifton Hill.
  • 10 laneway renewal works throughout the municipality.
  • Construction of additional public toilet capacity integrated with the Barkly Gardens pavilion.
  • Acoustic fence and inclusive entry at Keele Street.

Financial Sustainability Strategy

Yarra’s first Financial Sustainability Strategy was endorsed by Council on 12 December 2023, following a 4-week engagement process seeking feedback from the community. This strategy represents our dedication to responsible financial management, ensuring we meet future community needs. As the first Victorian council to create a strategy of this nature, this pioneering approach aims to guide our decision-making towards achieving financial sustainability.

Children’s Services

Richmond Kindergarten's upgrade has significantly increased capacity and incorporated sustainable features, earning an 'exceeding' quality rating from the Department of Education for its outstanding service. This state-of-the-art facility expands our 3 and 4-year-old kinder programs in line with the Victorian Government early childhood reforms. Along with new kindergarten rooms, energy efficiency and environmentally sustainable features, the centre includes a dedicated community room and garden space, with a mural by First Nations artist Nurratj Galnya (Rebecca Atkinson) featuring Yarra's native birds.

Community Awards

With 72 nominations, this year's Community Awards recognised the diverse efforts of individuals and groups in making Yarra a better place. The awards ceremony spotlighted the exceptional contributions within our community.
