Staying safe at the Gleadell Street Market during Stage 4 Restrictions

Thursday 27 August 2020

Since the introduction of Stage 4 coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions, Yarra Council has been closely following the advice of the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.

Markets are considered an essential service, as they are an important source of fresh produce for the community as well as supporting local business.

With this in mind the Gleadell Street Market has stayed open during Stage 4 restrictions. However, there have been some important changes made to the operation of the market during this period.

We have a responsibility to all stallholders and the community to provide a safe environment and abide by the directions of State Government. Victoria Police and local laws officers will be out and about making sure everyone is staying safe. Do the right thing, support the market, and don’t risk a fine!

We encourage all those attending the market in the coming weeks to read the information below and make sure you are following the rules.

Local shoppers only

Please remember that you must live within a 5km radius of the market. If you live further away please do your shopping closer to home.

Victoria Police have been monitoring, and will continue to check, how far you have travelled. Fines will be issued to those who are not from the local area.

One person does the shopping

During Stage 4 restrictions it is mandatory that only one person from the household does the shopping. This is to avoid overcrowding and make sure that everyone has safe access to this important resource.

  • Plan your trip and shop with purpose.
  • One person per household.
  • We will not be allowing groups of people to congregate at the market.

Groceries only – no takeaways

Victorian Governments guidelines relating to markets clearly state: ‘Markets are for food only with strict enforcement of density obligations.’

Items that will not be sold during Stage 4 include:

  • Flowers
  • Takeaway coffee
  • Hot food

No mask, no market

In line with State Government regulations you must wear a face mask when you shop at the market.

  • A strict no-mask no-entry policy is now in place for the Gleadell Street Market.
  • All stall holders and their staff will be wearing masks.

Physical distancing

Physical distancing and other safety and hygiene measures are in place to protect shoppers and local traders. We are carefully managing crowds, limiting numbers inside the market at any one time and encouraging everyone to stay at least 1.5 metres apart.

Hand hygiene

We ask that you use the hand sanitiser provided at entry points. Please don’t handle the produce and make sure you wash all items thoroughly when you get home.

Thank you to all those shoppers who have been following the rules and protecting the community. If we all do the right thing then everyone stays safe and we can get through this together!
