We wish all Tamil Victorians a happy and peaceful celebration of Thai Pongal Day which kicks off a week of festivities for the Tamil community.  

To acknowledge the celebration Mayor Misha Coleman released a short video wishing the local Tamil community well for their festival. 

The festival is a significant event for the Tamil community. Traditionally the festival welcomed a successful harvest, giving thanks to nature while also celebrating peace, abundance and happiness.  Now the festival celebrates a rich community culture and heritage that has been around for over 3000 years. 

Victoria is home for thousands of Tamils who came from countries including Sri Lanka, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius and South Africa. The Tamil community is a vibrant part of the richly multicultural community in Yarra.
