Faces of Yarra: Meet Ashbaadin “Din” Mohamed

Monday 19 February 2018

Ethiopian man washing dishes in bucket at farmers market

Originally from Ethiopia, Din emigrated to Australia in 2014 and now calls Yarra home.

Every Saturday, Din starts work at 7am setting up the Wash Against Waste marquee at either Collingwood Children’s Farm Farmers Market or Carlton Farmers Market.

The Wash Against Waste program works to reduce waste at farmers markets, starting with eliminating single-use coffee cups. Instead, customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable cup or use a mug provided. Once finished drinking their hot beverage, customers can wash their cup at the Wash Against Waste station (managed by Din) ready for the next customer to use.

"In Ethiopia I was a watch repair specialist. Omega, Rolex, you name it. Since moving to Australia it has been very difficult for me to find work."

"I live in Collingwood and I am learning English at Fitzroy Learning Network. I enjoy living close to the shops because I don't have my driver's licence in Australia yet and I travel by bike."

"Farmers markets are great. All the food and ingredients are so fresh. Everything comes straight from the farms. You can’t get fresher than that!"

Visit Melbourne Farmers Market to find out where to visit Din next.
