Clean Up Australia

Each year, Council supports Clean Up Australia Day activities on Clean Up Australia Day - the first Sunday in March.

In 2012, Council hosted a Clean Up activity in North Carlton. More than 30 people helped remove litter from local streets before enjoying a community barbecue in Curtain Square.

Cloth Nappies

Council have contracted EcoCubs to deliver the Yarra Cloth Nappy Library Service.
EcoCubs is offering a 10% discount off cloth nappies after using the Yarra Cloth Nappy Library.

Did you know?
You could save anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 per child by using modern cloth nappies.
Modern cloth nappies are easy to use – no soaking, no pinning and no folding.
Did you know that every single disposable nappy ever used is still sitting in landfill today?

The Yarra Cloth Nappy Library gives you the opportunity to try out different types, sizes and brands of modern cloth nappies for two weeks to help you find the perfect nappy system for you and your baby – at a one-off cost of $20.00.

For more information on cloth nappies, visit www.ecocubs.com.au and click on the information tab.

National Tree Day

Yarra City Council has been involved in National Tree Day since 2001. In the past decade residents have planted more than 25,000 seedlings in Yarra as part of National Tree Day. National Tree Day is coordinated by Planet Ark and gives all Australians an opportunity to get involved with their local environment at a community level.

For more information about National Tree Day in Yarra, contact Craig McGrath, Parks and Habitat Officer, on 9489 4588.

Greener Houses

The Greener Houses team of volunteers has planned the sustainability retrofit of the Richmond Community Learning Centre, creating Richmond’s first Eco-Living Demonstration Centre.
The team is keen to use the Centre to show others in our community how to live cheaper, healthier, greener.
You can join the Greener Houses volunteer team and help others do something to reduce their energy costs, make their homes more comfortable and help the environment.
Volunteers will receive free training in community engagement methods.

Gleadell Street Market

This popular and historical Saturday street market in the City of Yarra has joined forces with the local Council to achieve an amazing 70% reduction in the waste they send to landfill each week.

Prior to starting the Waste Wise process the market was producing up to four and a half tonnes of waste each week. In partnership with Council the market traders created an action plan to improve their waste management practices and change the behaviour of the market shoppers. Some of the initiatives that were introduced included standardising bin infrastructure, and introducing coloured bins for separate waste streams. And in 2010 Gleadell Street Market became a plastic bag-free zone.
