A picket fenceIt is important that you pay your rates by the respective due date shown on the annual rate notice.

Payment arrangements

If you are experiencing financial hardship that may prevent you paying your rates by the due date, you should contact Council as soon as possible to discuss an alternative payment arrangement. Please phone Council's Revenue Services Unit on 9205 5406.

Please plan ahead, do not leave it to the due date. Interest will start to accrue for any rates outstanding after the respective due date.

Penalty Interest

Penalty interest on any arrears of rates will accrue until full payment of the outstanding amount and the interest accrued to the date of payment is received.

Penalty interest will be charged at the rate of 9.5% per annum.  The interest rate is fixed by the State Government under Section 2 of the Penalty Interest Rates Act 1983. Failure to pay can result in possible legal action for rate recovery.

Overdue Rates and Charges

Under Section 181 of the Local Government Act 1989, Council has the power to dispose of property where:

  • there are rates (including enforcement costs and interest) which are more than three years overdue, and
  • there is no current arrangement for the payment of the overdue rates, and
  • there is a Court order requiring the payment or part-payment of the overdue rates.
