Amcor Site, Alphington
In February 2008, Amcor announced that it planned to close its Alphington plant within the next three years, in order to move its operations to New South Wales. Amcor put the site on the market in 2009, however it is yet to be sold.
Background
Council adopted a set of design and development principles for the Amcor site, a 16.5 hectare site on Heidelberg Road, on the corner of Chandler Highway extending down to the Yarra River. The design and development principles can be viewed here:

The principles, which were developed in consultation with community members and stakeholders, outline Council’s vision for the site and provide a guide for its future owners and developers. They were adopted by Council at its January 2009 meeting.
Council believes that the site should be a showcase for sustainable living and urban design, including affordable housing, characterised by safe, walkable neighbourhoods, whilst maintaining and improving the Yarra River corridor’s vistas, vegetation and wildlife habitat qualities. The principles also set out State Government opportunities in relation to the site and list the documentation and strategic justification required to accompany any future development proposals.
Council established a taskforce to including Councillors, State Government representatives, local residents, business operators and ratepayers to work through the complex issues surrounding the future of the site. The Amcor Taskforce met on a number of occasions from April to June 2009 to investigate a range of issues that had arisen, including environmentally sustainable design and buildings, transport and access, and community services and open space. A number of changes were made to the Principles which were adopted by Council in August 2009.
