Scotchmer/Rae St intersection closed until mid-2016
2 October 2014
The intersection of Scotchmer and Rae streets in North Fitzroy has closed for up to 18 months as Melbourne Water begins work on a major sewer upgrade.
Melbourne Water estimates the closure will remain in place between October 2014 and mid 2016.
Traffic travelling between St Georges Road and Nicholson Street will be diverted at Rae Street.
Council advises motorists and cyclists heading east west to seek alternative routes while the closure is in place.
Footpaths will remain open for pedestrians during the works.
The extended closure is required to allow Melbourne Water to excavate to a depth of 25 metres to connect to an existing sewer.
Melbourne Water will build a new 510 metre section along Pigdon and Scotchmer streets, between Amess Street in Carlton North and Rae Street.
The works are part of a larger project to upgrade a 100-year-old, 1.35km section of sewer running between Pigdon Street and Princes Street so that it can meet future demand.
You can find out more about the project, including working hours and contact details for Melbourne Water, on the Carlton Main Sewer Improvement page on Melbourne Water's website.
