Yarra’s First Safe Travel Strategy 2016–2026
7 September 2016
Yarra’s first Safe Travel Strategy is ‘Towards Zero’: Council’s plan to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2026.
A comprehensive and collaborative approach has been adopted in developing the first Safe Travel Strategy for Yarra, supported by Transport Accident Commission (TAC) funding.
The Strategy aims to ensure that walking and cycling are safe, and are perceived as safe, so as to encourage more people to make the shift from cars to active transport.
A Safe Travel Working Group, which includes community members, Councillors and a broad range of stakeholders including VicRoads, Victoria Police and TAC, was established to contribute to the development of the draft Strategy.
This working group has met on three occasions during the development and community engagement of the Strategy.
The Safe Travel Strategy recognises the different needs of different road and path users, and enables Council to develop a balanced, evidence-based approach to decision making for the benefit of the community.
To find out more about the strategy see the Safe Travel Strategy online.
