Council trials natural alternative for weed control
11 November 2014
A weed killing method that uses saturated steam instead of herbicides is being trialled in North Fitzroy.
Council is undertaking the trial using steam to control weeds in Park Street and Linear Reserve (including Holden Byrne Reserve) this month.
The area will be treated about four times over the next six months.
The purpose of the trial is to investigate whether steam is a suitable alternative to weed killer in park situations including playgrounds, garden beds, picnic areas etc.
Some residents have previously indicated to Council that they prefer herbicides were not used in parks and reserves.
Council will assess whether the steam method is efficient, cost effective and beneficial to the environment, with a view to possibly introducing it as part of its regular street maintenance service.
