Ways to celebrate NAIDOC Week
5 July 2016
It’s NAIDOC Week (3-10 July) and there are many ways you can celebrate including at a free Family Day at Collingwood Children’s Farm on 6 July from 10am to 4pm.
NAIDOC Week was established in 1938 to proudly acknowledge and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year’s national theme is - Songlines - The living narrative of our nation.
Council has provided funding to Aboriginal Housing Victoria’s Family Day at the Collingwood Children’s Farm. This event will feature Welcome to Country, gum leaf playing, dances, stories, an AFL football clinic and a BBQ lunch.
Yarra Council works in close consultation with Aboriginal community members and service providers to promote Aboriginal culture, increase Aboriginal employment, promote social justice and eliminate racism.
Council’s Aboriginal History of Yarra website and Celebrating Aboriginal Culture in Gertrude Street Facebook page offer further opportunities to explore the culture of Yarra’s Traditional Owners.
