Precinct tree planting

Street trees in Rathdowne Street, North CarltonThe planting and management of street trees within Yarra is carefully planned.

Council visits each precinct, assessing every street and identifying opportunities for the planting of new trees. Where opportunities for planting have been identified, appropriate tree species are selected taking into consideration their ability to tolerate harsh conditions, the street layout and neighbourhood character.

Many street trees live for over 100 years and, therefore, Council places a high emphasis on researching and selecting the right tree for the right street, not only for today but also for future generations to enjoy. The implementation of the masterplans will take many years.

Tree selection

Street trees are selected to tolerate the harsh urban conditions that exist within Yarra. Conditions such as heavy clay soils, air pollution, reflected heat from buildings and roads, highly compacted conditions, small constrained spaces, overhead power lines, underground services and overshadowing from tall buildings are taken into consideration. Inherent characteristics such as evergreen, deciduous, flowering, leaf colour, bark colour, height and shape, growth rate, longevity and weed potential in bushland environments are considered during the tree selection process.

Street layout

Each street is visited and its physical size and layout assessed. Factors such as footpath width, road width, on-street parking arrangements, proximity of buildings to the footpath, height of buildings, orientation of the streets (which affects the sun access) and presence of overhead services are taken into consideration. These factors inform the decision to retain or remove existing trees and confirm if there is space to plant new trees.

Neighbourhood character

The character of the street is assessed in the context of the local neighbourhood. Elements such as dominant land use (residential, industrial etc), existing street trees (including their type, condition and character), the adjoining open space (which varies from the formal exotic parks to bushland reserves along waterways), architectural character, presence of bluestone kerb and channel and the character of residential gardens are taken into consideration.
