Yarra Sustainability Awards - 2015

The sixth annual Yarra Sustainability Awards celebrated innovative community efforts towards environmental sustainability.

Held on Thursday 4 June, the awards ceremony highlighted the work of individuals and organisations sharing Council’s vision for a sustainable city.

Sustainable Business Award
Winner - Blick Creative
Blick Creative is a marketing and design agency that helps boost awareness for social and environmental initiatives. Blick Creative collaborates with ethically driven organisations, helping spread their message with professional services and financial support. The business also runs its annual tree planting day and encourages others to adopt eco-friendly practices.

Educational Services Award
Winner - Bridge Road Early Learning Centre
Every child at the Bridge Road Early Learning Centre is well informed and educated about the importance of sustainability in our ever-changing world. The centre allows young children to understand sudden weather changes due to climate change and the different types of environmental threats that we are facing.

Highly Commended - Collingwood Alternative School
Collingwood Alternative School’s collaborative Garden Projects with Yarra Youth Services and Urban Agriculture, Willowview Care Centre, St Phillips Church and Growing Spaces showcased the integration of environmental sustainability in the VCAL curriculum and enabled members of the school to become engaged in activities with their local community, providing opportunities to develop other environmental initiatives in the future.

Community Action Award
Winner - Out Doors Inc
Out Doors Inc. redesigned a large community garden in Carlton, which is used by culturally diverse groups and benefits the local community.  They also completed a River Care program. Participants explored the Yarra River via raft and foot, cleaning up sections and carrying out activities to create healthier waterways.

Highly Commended - 3000acres
3000acres is making it easier for more people to grow more food in more places. The 3000acres website enables people to map vacant land and get together to turn unused spaces into gardens. The program has seen six gardens created across Melbourne in the last 18 months and many more are in the works.

Building Design and Development Award
Winner - Cardno
Cardno is responsible for a simple and maintainable vegetated litter trap that complements the Lee and Station Street intersection upgrade and contributes to improving the Yarra waterway.

Local Hero Award
Winner - Beth Cameron
Beth Cameron has been the coordinator of the Friends of the Earth food cooperative in Smith Street, Collingwood, for 25 years. Running a business for this long is an outstanding effort in its own right, but managing a large, volunteer-run not-for-profit business over this period is an astonishing accomplishment. In addition to being an ethical business that constantly strives to be as sustainable as possible, the co-op has a strong social justice component through providing many hundreds of people a year with experience through the volunteer, Community based order and transitional programs that are run in conjunction with local and state governments.

Frank Fisher Award
Winner - Glenda Lindsay
Glenda’s passion for the environment, food security and urban agriculture is awe-inspiring. For years she has been integral to a range of experimental and successful food production initiatives across Yarra and has inspired and encouraged numerous people to embrace local, organic food production and sharing.

People’s Choice Award
Winner - 3000acres
