Barkly Gardens is a green oasis in the heart of bustling Richmond.
Officially opened in 1867, Barkly Gardens is Richmond's only 19th century residential garden square. Avenues of trees line the major paths which weave through the park, providing plenty of shade.
Barkly Gardens are the perfect spot for family picnics. The park contains barbeque facilities, a children's playground, toilets and picnic tables.
Barkly Gardens playground upgrade
In September 2015 Council received feedback on a draft concept for the playground upgrade for Barkly Gardens. Council received a variety of ideas for inclusion in the design. The most common response received was to keep the same number and type of swings in the park. This request has been accommodated into the design. Other common comments related to the provision of shade, and improving management of dogs so that they are not off lead in the playground or using this area as a toilet.
Playground construction involves the disturbance to the root zones of the playground trees, as well as some root pruning. Given the dry winter and spring we had in 2015, and the need to ensure the ongoing health of the trees in the playground, the construction works were postponed until winter 2016 when the trees go into dormancy. This also means no interruption to use of the playground in the summer months.
Works are currently underway and are expected to take up to one month to complete. The playground will be closed for all of June 2016 and it is expected that the playground will reopen in early July:
