2015 Australia Day Award Winners

Citizen of the Year David LangdonYarra's Australia Day awards were presented at Council's annual Australia Day citizenship ceremony held on 26 January 2015.

The awards recognise individuals and groups who have made an outstanding contribution to the Yarra community.

Citizen of the Year – David Langdon


For decades David has been serving the Yarra community through his volunteer work.

A lifetime Richmond resident, David is perhaps best known for his role as president and life member of the Richmond and Burnley Historical Society, which he first joined in 1985. With his passion for local history, and his wealth of knowledge about the area, he has played a key role in developing the society’s impressive collection and digitising important historical records.

David has also served as a committee member of the Ecumenical Food Relief Centre, as a volunteer for the Red Cross and as an instructor with the Burnley Gymnastic Club. Additionally he spent two years on the Neighbourhood Justice Centre’s Community Advisory Group.

David believes in the importance of community and making connections with people, and is recognised by everyone who meets him as an all-round good bloke.

Community Event of the Year Award - Smith Street Dreaming

Smith Street Dreaming is a one day music event on the corner of Stanley and Smith streets that is part of the Leaps and Bounds Music Festival. It has become a showcase of community spirit, Aboriginal pride and wonderful talent.

Community Service of the Year Award - all of the groups and individuals who were involved in the campaign against the East West Link

This collaboration of community groups and individuals provided a forum for people to express their views, raise awareness and challenge the East West Link project.

Young Citizen of the Year Award - Wilson Poni

Wilson embodies a spirit of connectedness, and brings together young people from all of the high rise estates, including Richmond, Fitzroy and Collingwood, participating in and assisting with most of Yarra’s Youth Services programs.

Highly commended nominees - Kirby Taylor and Abouk Tel

Kirby and Abouk have both shown great dedication and leadership through their volunteer work and participation in Yarra’s Youth Ambassador program.
