Clearways
Clearways are located throughout Yarra. It is important that they are kept clear according to the prescribed times on the signs.
A vehicle parked in a clearway during the no standing times may be towed away. Check here for information on how to reclaim a towed vehicle.
Extended clearways
In 2008, the Brumby State Government announced it would be implementing extended clearway times on arterial roads.
In early 2010, clearways were extended in Victoria Street and Victoria Parade. The clearways were extended from 7am-9.15am to 6.30am-10am, and from 4.30pm-6.30pm to 4pm-7pm (except at intersections with traffic lights where the clearways were extended to 3pm for approx. 100 metres on either side of the intersection).
Yarra Council opposed the extension of clearways for more than two years, concerned that it would harm the livelihoods of local traders and increase through traffic on Yarra streets.
Yarra and Stonnington Councils took action in the Supreme Court, contesting the lawfulness of the decision by the Minister for Roads and Ports and VicRoads to extend clearways.
The court case was held in May 2010. In early October 2010, Supreme Court Justice Robert Osborn found in favour of the Minister and VicRoads on the majority of issues in dispute. Here is a link to a media release about the court decision.
In October 2010, the case was concluded, with Yarra and Stonnington Councils consenting to orders dismissing their proceedings against VicRoads and the Minister. All parties will bear their own costs. Here is a link to a media release about the outcome and the next steps.
Extended clearways removed in Victoria Street and Victoria Parade
In December, Council welcomed an announcement by the Baillieu Government that extended clearways in Victoria Street and Victoria Parade would be removed by Christmas 2010.
VicRoads updated the signs along Victoria Street and Victoria Parade in the week before Christmas.
The previous clearway times of 7am-9.15am and 4.30pm – 6.30pm (Monday-Friday) now apply.
The Government's announcement also means that extended clearways will not be introduced in Bridge Road, St Georges Road and Swan Street, as had been anticipated.
Here is Council's media release welcoming the Government's announcement.
