Exemption from Equal Opportunity Act
In September 2011, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) granted Yarra Council an exemption from the Equal Opportunity Act 1995 to enable it to:
(a) conduct a women only swimming program at the Richmond Recreation Centre outside normal operating hours from 6.30pm to 8.30pm each Saturday, except for the month of Ramadan and for a three-week period over late December/early January, and
(b) employ women only during these sessions, and
(c) advertise these matters.
In late July/early August, Council advertised its application for an exemption in the Herald Sun and local newspapers, and advised any person who was interested in providing comments to make a submission to VCAT by Monday 12 September. VCAT did not receive any submissions from Yarra community members.
On Friday 23 September, VCAT granted Council a further three-year exemption to hold women only programs at the Richmond Recreation Centre.
