Yarra Sports Strategy
In 2008 Council aopted a five year plan to expand and facilitate sport in the City of Yarra.
The Yarra Sports Strategy addresses issues such as equity and accessibility to local sporting facilities and activities.
Given the strong link between physical activity and personal health, Council wants more people in Yarra to enjoy getting active and participating in sport and exercise.
To achieve this there needs to be appropriate facilities, programs and services available for all sections of the community.
The Yarra Sports Strategy provides:
- Participation levels in various sporting activities in Yarra and forecasts of future levels
- Usage levels of Yarra’s sporting facilities
- Clarification of the role that Council will take in supporting and developing sport
- Avenues for strengthening partnerships with other sports providers (ie. Community clubs, private providers, schools)
- An assessment of the capability of Council’s sporting facilities to meet the sporting needs of the community
- An identification of the demand for sport in Yarra and gaps in the provision of sports and sporting facilities
- An identification of barriers and restrictions that inhibit participation in sport and what support is required to overcome these
- How new/additional sports can be provided for within Yarra, whilst continuing to support existing groups.
