Atherton Gardens Community Hub
A former car park on Fitzroy’s Atherton Gardens housing estate is being transformed into a community hub with a focus on family and children’s services.
The hub will include an early learning and child care centre with up to 119 places, and maternal and child health and family support services.
Construction of the $5.2 million hub began in early March 2011.
Expected to open in early 2013, the hub will form the ground floor of a seven-storey, 152-unit social housing development on the corner of Brunswick and King William streets. Please find below an image of how the overall development will look.
Broadmeadows Uniting Care, Brotherhood of St Laurence and Yarra Council are jointly providing $2.1 million to build the hub, with the State and Federal Governments funding the remainder.
The three founding parties have formed an incorporated organisation that will oversee the development of the hub over the next two years. The yet-to-be-named organisation has signed a 40 year lease with the Office of Housing to operate and manage the community services that will run from the hub.
In coming months, Expressions of Interest will open for a community member to join the hub’s Board of Directors, which will work closely with the community to ensure the hub’s services meet the needs of local families and children.
