AAA Frequently Asked Questions

AAA circu programThe Access All Abilities (AAA) Program offers inclusive sports and recreation programs for people aged 7 to 19 years who have a disability or special needs. Council works with local sports clubs to develop suitable programs for children of all ages and abilities.

What are the benefits of the Access All Abilities Program?

Regular physical activity is vital to the growth and development of young people. Access All Abilities programs offer supportive and inclusive coaching to help children learn a new sport, increase fitness, build strength and coordination, improve communication skills and develop self–confidence.

What disabilities and special needs do we cater for?

Our programs cater to people with many different abilities, including young people with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and intellectual and physical disabilities. Programs are designed to meet the abilities of all participants while challenging young people to improve their skills at a steady and enjoyable pace.

Do I need to live in the City of Yarra to access these programs?

No. You and your child do not have to live or work within the municipality to access any of Yarra’s programs.

Do AAA programs provide respite for me and my family?

No. AAA sports and recreation programs in Yarra are not designed to provide traditional respite care.

Council has developed a philosophy for our program that we call ‘active respite’. This means that programs are designed to include siblings and parents. Parents can also help with coaching, or can watch from the sidelines with other families.

If you do receive respite time, you may consider discussing with your provider whether this time could be spent participating in an AAA program.

Which clubs in Yarra offer AAA programs?

Council develops AAA activities with clubs that are inclusive and encourage all members of the community to participate.

Clubs that offer AAA programs include the Collingwood Basketball Association, Richmond Soccer Club, Fitzroy Junior Football Club, Edinburgh Cricket Club and Mayors Park Tennis Centre.

Clubs provide a team manager and a minimum of two coaches for AAA programs. AAA programs often take place at different times to other junior sports programs to ensure that participants and their families receive the full attention of coaches.

How much do AAA programs cost and what do we get?

There is no set fee for participating in AAA programs as costs can differ from sport to sport. We don’t play in competition or leagues so we are able to offer reduced fees for most programs. Fees include registration, insurance, a uniform, and equipment to take home and use for practice.

Where can you go after participating in AAA sports?

In some cases, AAA sports can be a gateway for participants to become involved in other club teams. If this is possible, this option will be discussed with your family.

What if the sport we want to do is not offered in Yarra?

If the sport you want is not available in Yarra, we are happy to provide information about sports that are available in other municipalities. We are always looking for ideas for new programs, and welcome your suggestions on sports you would like to see offered in Yarra. We can also help to put your family directly in contact with local sports clubs.
