Queen Victoria Statue - Edinburgh Gardens
Council is not expected to decide whether to install a statue of Queen Victoria at Edinburgh Gardens until next year.
A proposal to spend up to $120,000 on the statue (which would stand in the same place as a statue that vanished from the park more than 100 years ago) was considered by Council at a meeting at the Richmond Town Hall on Monday 23 May 2011.
Rather than commit funds to the new statue, Council called for a report on the timelines and costs of implementing each element set out in the Edinburgh Gardens Master Plan.
Those projects include the restoration of the Queen Victoria statue, restoration of the war memorial and improving the setting for the rotunda.
Council asked that the report from Council officers set out which projects might have to be postponed or deleted.
Council has requested to receive the report in advance of planning for its 2012/2013 budget.
The Edinburgh Gardens Master Plan previously endorsed by Council recommends restoration of the statue of Queen Victoria, who provided a grant for land to be provided for the park in 1862.
