Galleries
The City of Yarra is known for its diverse artistic and cultural life. It is home to many artists, arts organisations and leading contemporary galleries.
History
In the 1960s, as Yarra's manufacturing industries declined, warehouses and factories throughout the City were abandoned. Painters, sculptors and performers began to transform these large disused spaces into studios, galleries and theatres, and a new community grew from the skeleton of the old.
Diversity
Within the multicultural community of Yarra, you will find leading commercial galleries, contemporary arts spaces, artist run galleries and cafes with regular exhibitions. Each gallery is distinct, catering for a different audience and clientele.
The Yarra Gallery symbol
The City of Yarra has developed the Yarra Gallery symbol to make visual arts venues more accessible to both visitors and the local community. Look out for this bold orange street sign which directs you to many of Yarra's contemporary art galleries.
