Proposed Johnston Street Local Area Plan
Council is preparing a Draft Local Area Plan for Johnston Street (Abbotsford and Collingwood).
The Draft Plan will cover the shopping, commercial and residential areas along Johnston Street, from the Yarra River (Abbotsford) at the eastern end through to Smith Street (Collingwood) in the west.

What is the purpose of the proposed Plan?
The proposed Plan would be expected to improve the overall function of Johnston Street by providing objectives and strategies to manage future change.
Putting in place a plan for the area’s future will help ensure the area develops in a way that is liveable, sustainable and economically viable.
The Plan will seek to provide answers to the following questions:
- Land Use What types of land uses will create activity and a vibrant street environment? Is the current land use mix appropriate?
- Built Form How should new development be designed and what should the centre look like in 10–20 years?
- Public Realm What opportunities exist for improvements to the public realm within the study area?
- Access and Movement How can pedestrian, bicycle and public transport access be improved, and vehicle traffic better managed in and around the centre?
Issues and Opportunities Paper
Community feedback on the Issues and Opportunities Paper was sought in October and November 2011.

Community workshops
A community workshop about the Issues and Opportunities Paper and the proposed Local Area Plan for Johnston Street was held in October 2011. The feedback provided was very constructive. Here is a

Next steps
Council officers will consider the community feedback received and prepare a draft Johnston Street Local Area Plan.
Council is expected to consider whether or not to a draft plan is ready to put out for community feedback at Council meeting in May or June 2012.
