Melbourne 2030
In 2002, the State Government introduced Melbourne 2030, a plan for the growth and development of the Melbourne metropolitan area.
It provides a framework for governments at all levels to respond to the diverse needs of those who live and work in and near to Melbourne, and those who visit. The plan's aim is to continue to protect the liveability of the established areas of Melbourne, and to increasingly concentrate major change in strategic redevelopment sites such as activity centres and underdeveloped land. Melbourne 2030 Audit Expert Group Report, 2008
This was an independent audit of the implementation of Melbourne 2030, five years on from when it was first introduced.
Key findings of this report include:
- The faster than expected growth of Melbourne’s population makes the fundamental principles of Melbourne 2030 more relevant than ever.
- There was general support for the fundamental principles of Melbourne 2030, but considerable criticism about its implementation.
- There was progress towards the implementation of Melbourne 2030, but under-performance in the following areas:
- Directing residential growth from the fringe to established areas
- Lack of significant residential and mixed-use development in Activity Centres
- Insufficient provision or commitment to public transport investments
The report found that three essential issues that were crucial to the successful implementation of Melbourne 2030: clarity of responsibility, adequate resources, and broad-based support.
