Hoddle Street Study
In 2009, the Brumby State Government announced it would be undertaking
a $5 million, two-year study into traffic solutions along Hoddle Street.
The study aimed to "investigate ways to improve the efficiency and reliability of all modes of transport along and across Hoddle Street from the Eastern Freeway entrance to just north of the M1 Freeway (CityLink)".
VicRoads had been expected to complete a detailed feasibility report by mid-2011, but the report is yet to be released.
Background
Council was concerned about media reports that multiple overpasses and underpasses were being considered, as this could increase the level of traffic travelling through Yarra and disconnect local communities from each other.
Council believes increased and improved public transport is the lasting solution to congestion on Hoddle Street . The Brumby Government made some progress in this regard with the $360 million DART (Doncaster Area Rapid Transit) plan for dedicated bus lanes along Victoria Parade and Hoddle Street, but Council would prefer that a rail link was established between Doncaster and Clifton Hill.
During 2009, Council asked the State Government to work with Council to develop terms of reference for a broader examination of how to fix congestion along Hoddle Street, which would also look into public transport solutions.
Council was pleased that the Government agreed to Council’s request to have a seat at the table on the study, and that the Government started consulting with the local community.
During September 2010, VicRoads held three community workshops in Collingwood to discuss the future of Hoddle Street.
