Proposed road closures - Abbotsford Street and Yarra Street

Abbotsford Convent In June 2011, Council sought feedback from residents regarding a proposal to close the east end of Abbotsford Street and of Yarra Street (near Clarke Street) in Abbotsford.

Sixty-four individual submissions and a petition including signatures of an additional 85 residents were received in response to the proposal.

Twelve submissions supported the proposed road closures. Seven submissions expressed concerns regarding the proposal or support for one but not both of the closures, and forty-five individual submissions - and those who had signed the petition - opposed the road closures.

In October 2011, after considering residents' feedback, Council resolved not to proceed with the proposed closures.

Instead, Council will seek further discussions with the Abbotsford Convent, Collingwood Children's Farm, the University of Melbourne Early Learning Centre, Sophia Mundi School and the Good Shepherd Sisters Nursing Home and relevant State Government agencies on ways to improve access, safety and amenity in the area.

Meanwhile, Council has established an advisory group involving local residents and representatives of the precinct’s organisations to find long-term agreed solutions to traffic and parking issues. The group's recommendations are expected to be reported to Council in May 2012.

The committee is expected to report back to Council in early 2012.
