New bike parking in Best Street, North Fitzroy
Council has replaced two car parking spaces in front of Piedimonte’s Supermarket in Best Street, North Fitzroy with eight bicycle parking hoops.
The hoops have were installed in June 2012, initially on a trial basis.
Council installed the hoops to increase the number of shoppers who can use this space for parking and to provide a designated area for bikes so they don’t obstruct the footpath. Four additional hoops were installed on the asphalt area in the triangular open space (between Best Street and St Georges Road) for cargo bikes and bikes that carry trailers.
The bicycle hoops that were once on the footpath were replaced by poles that can be used by dog owners to tie up their dogs while they shop.
In May 2012, Council sought community feedback about its original proposal to install seven bicycle hoops outside of Piedimonte’s. The project was supported by 85% of people who attended an onsite information stall and by 73% of people who provided feedback via email.
In response to community feedback, Council modified the proposal to increase the bicycle parking outside of Piedimonte’s to eight hoops and to provide a separate parking area for large bikes.
The cost of the project is about $10,000.
Council has installed similar on-street bike parking facilities in the following locations:
- Outside Fitzroy Library, Moor Street, Fitzroy
- Outside the Great Northern Hotel, Pigdon Street, North Carlton
- Outside Southern School of Natural Therapies, Victoria Street, Fitzroy
- Outside Fitzroy Pool, Alexandra Parade, Fitzroy
- Outside the National Hotel, Lambert Street, Richmond
Creating better parking facilities in Yarra is a key feature of Council’s Bicycle Strategy, which aims to improve bike infrastructure to encourage more people to travel by bike.
