Street parties, special events and fundraisers

Dancing in the street at the Fitzroy Town Hall re-openingCouncil is happy to work with residents and community groups to assist with road occupations for street parties, special events and fundraisers. 

If you need a road or lane closed for a short time for an event, you will need to apply to Council for a permit.

Council has put together information to help you plan a safe and successful event.

What to do

There are a few things that need to be done to prepare for a street closure. These include:

  • Appoint an event coordinator
  • Fill in and submit a Temporary Road Occupation application
  • Comply with all Council local laws
  • Obtain public liability of at least $10m
  • Obtain any approvals or permits required by other relevant authorities, e.g. Victoria Police, VicRoads
  • Notify affected residents and businesses of the event.

Timeframe

You must submit your application minimum 8 weeks prior to the event. The Victoria Police require 10 weeks notice prior to the event. Applications to Victoria Police must be accompanied by a letter of approval from Council.

Additional requirements for a street party road closure

For a temporary road occupation for a street party to go ahead the party must be:

  • Held in a local street
  • Supported by at least 80% of the street's residents and businesses.

Victoria Police

The Victoria Police require 10 weeks notice prior to the event. Applications to Victoria Police must be accompanied by a letter of approval from Council.

Costs

It may be possible for Public Liability Insurance Policy for a residential street party to be arranged through a local government-affiliated insurance broker.
