Victoria Street Lunar Festival – Year of the Rooster
10 January 2017
Lunar New Year celebrations have always been an important part of Yarra’s festival calendar. 2017 promises to be bigger than ever as the City of Yarra celebrates the Chinese and Vietnamese New Year through the annual Lunar Festival.
The Victoria Street Lunar Festival on Sunday 22 January will be a showcase of diverse performances with everything from Chinese opera to Vietnamese pop and carnival rides.
The festival will also feature one of the largest Chinese dragons in Australia, a cooking demonstration at the Tastes of Asia cooking stage and plenty of hawker food stalls to taste Vietnamese and Chinese treats.
Yarra Mayor, Cr Amanda Stone said, “This is a fantastic and vibrant New Year festival that mixes old traditions with the modern. Victoria Street will be transformed into a big, inclusive street party to welcome the Year of the Rooster,” she said.
"I encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the sights, smells, sounds and tastes of traditional and contemporary Vietnamese and Chinese culture, and to welcome in the new year,” said Cr Stone.
The Victoria Street Lunar Festival is funded through Council’s 2017–19 Celebrate Yarra Grants Program and will run from 11am-10 pm on 22 January 2017.
