Council calls for share of bike scheme

21 January 2013

Council has asked the State Government to extend the Melbourne Bike Share Scheme into Yarra.

Mayor Jackie Fristacky recently wrote to the Minister for Public Transport and Roads Terry Mulder to reaffirm Council's desire to see the two year old public bike hire scheme extended into Yarra.

“Council remains extremely interested in Melbourne Bike Share, and we believe it would more successful if it were extended into Yarra,” Cr Fristacky said.

“Hire bikes are regularly observed in several parts of Yarra, and we believe our proximity to the CBD and Yarra’s unique attractions are highly suited to tourists and commuters.

Cr Fristacky said Council officers had noted a recent trend in development applications in which traffic reports referred to the potential for the bike share scheme to be extended to Yarra.

The Abbotsford Convent, the Australian Catholic University precinct and popular shopping strips like Bridge Road, Victoria Street and Brunswick Street were nominated by the Mayor as potential locations for bike share pods.

Abbotsford Convent CEO Maggie Maguire backed Yarra’s calls to see the bike scheme expanded, saying a pod at the Convent would enhance access to the whole Convent precinct.

Cr Fristacky also requested the Minister to provide Yarra with the results of a review into the bike share scheme recently undertaken by VicRoads.
