Celebrating our diverse culture
16 March 2015
To celebrate Cultural Diversity Week (17 - 21 March) Council is holding a free multicultural lunch at Richmond Town Hall on Tuesday 17 March from 10.00am to 1.00pm.
The colourful celebration will include:
- A traditional welcome to country
- Free lunch
- Multicultural entertainment of dancing and singing.
City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Phillip Vlahogiannis said “Cultural Diversity Week is a time to celebrate the people, cultures, faiths and languages that make up Yarra’s diverse community”.
“Diversity is a key strength of our community. Our council and our community must be truly inclusive to ensure we harness that strength as fully as possible.
At Yarra we strive to ensure our community is a welcoming place where people feel free to express their cultural, linguistic and religious identity and where they have access to services and are supported to participate fully in civic life “ Cr Vlahogiannis said.
Council will also be launching its new Multicultural Partnerships Plan during Cultural Diversity Week.
The Multicultural Partnerships Plan is one of a number of key plans Council has endorsed in order to promote and foster a community that is engaged, valued and has equitable access to services and information. The Plan’s actions plot Yarra’s future endeavours with individuals, groups and other stakeholders, and will be reviewed annually.
Nearly 40% of Yarra’s population was born overseas and 33% of local residents speak a language other than English at home.
