Open Space Strategy

Yarra's waterways, inner city location, diverse social mix and heritage character all contribute to a unique landscape.

The Yarra Open Space Strategy serves as a guide for how Council provides a cohesive, linked and well-managed system of open space to meet residents' needs.

Yarra has a total of 235 hectares of open space that is useable and accessible, with an additional 75.4 hectares of open space that is available on a fee paying basis.

It is Council's goal to ensure the long-term economic, cultural and environmental viability of Yarra's open space network so that green spaces are protected and enhanced for current and future generations

Some of the key goals of the Yarra Open Space Strategy include:

Creating more open space in parts of the City, especially in Collingwood, Richmond and Cremorne
Completing the gaps in the linear trail networks along the waterways
Providing more park infrastructure like seats, tables, shelters, toilets etc
Improving the environmental values along the waterway corridors including the Yarra River, Merri Creek and Darebin Creek
Incorporating environmental sustainability principles into future park design, maintenance and management practices
Addressing conflicts between different users including cyclists, pedestrians, dog walkers, sporting users
Adequately researching, protecting and celebrating the Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultural heritage values in open space
