Condell Reserve

Melways 2C, C9

Condell Reserve is a small reserve opposite the Fitzroy Town Hall.

Proposed upgrade of Condell Reserve

Council has proposed new works at the Reserve in the 2011/2012 financial year.
However, several residents have written to Council requesting the works be cancelled and the park left in its current state.
Subsequently, a community meeting was held on 29 August 2011 for residents and Ward Councillors to discuss the park's future, including whether or not new works should take place.

Background

In May and June 2011, Council sought community feedback about a Draft Condell Reserve Concept Plan.

The following improvements were proposed for Condell Reserve:

  • introduce pathways in the park to provide better access and improve linkages with surrounding streets
  • install feature seating near the playground and under existing trees
  • Create a new garden bed along the northern boundary of the park, with the inclusion of some food plants
  • Plant new trees along the southern boundary of park
  • Provide some garden beds within the playground and incorporate sensory and textured plants for additional interest
  • Remove the existing boundary fence along Napier Street and the southern half of Condell Street
  • Introduce an area of sawn concrete fragments in between the two central trees (using recycled concrete from the old footpath).

Condell Reserve to remain open space until at least 2060

The park's long-term future was secured in late 2010, when the land was rezoned from a Residential 1 Zone to Public Park and Recreation Zone.

After calling for community feedback in May 2010, Council adopted Amendment C116 to the Yarra Planning Scheme, which resulted in the rezoning. The Amendment was approved by the Planning Minister in late October 2010.

Council and the Department of Human Services - which owns the 1100m2 site on the corner of Napier and Condell streets - have agreed to a new 50 year lease, meaning community members can look forward to enjoying this open space for decades to come.
